The Wounded Warriors Project advocates for wounded United States veterans and service members via several supportive initiatives. The organization strives to not only provide direct support to injured service members, but also works to promote advocacy and understanding within the military and the public as a whole.
Encouraging economic empowerment, whole-body health, and overall success, WWP’s numerous programs include Project Odyssey. Inspired by the Greek epic poem, which recounts a hero’s trials on his arduous journey home, the rehabilitative program uses outdoor recreation to help service members manage combat stress. Through activities including whitewater rafting, horseback riding, fishing, and rock climbing, Project Odyssey aims to improve participants’ overall mental outlook in a supportive, enriching environment.
WWP offers multiple unique iterations of Project Odyssey. The regional program comprises a 5-day event spent with warriors from the local area, while Project Odyssey: International allows active duty service members to begin the program at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Germany, before returning home. Additionally, Couples Project Odyssey provides an opportunity for significant others to work together to overcome emotional obstacles on a 5-day couples retreat.
